A powerful tool for nanoscopic size analysis and detection

About the technology

Nanospacer is a specially designed microscope coverslip which makes it possible to observe particles at nanoscale by using a standard optical microscope. Simply explained, the device consists of a transparent coverslip attached to a bottom substrate, creating a nanospacer between the layers (fig 1A).

Resources

  • Research Council Norway commercialization grant
  • Patent pending
  • Prototypes ready for end-user testing
  • Norinnova as commercialization partner

Value proposition

  • Simplicity – Minimal training needed. In addition to the Nanospacer, all you need is a conventional optical microscope and a camera

  • Affordable – significantly cheaper compared to conventional nanofluidic systems

  • Versatility – can be used to observe any nanoparticles

Figure 1: Principle of Nanospacer- Overview of the Nanospacer unit with upper glass attached to lower glass with a small amount of UV-glue (spacer) in the center, creating a Nanospace (blue line) between the glasses which can range from 100nm to 1μm, depending on particle size of interest (A). By pipetting a tiny amount of sample on the edge of the upper glass, the liquid sample is rapidly being pulled in between the glasses by capillary forces (B). Larger particles (blue) are effectively prevented from entering the nanospace by nanofiltration (C). The Nanofiltration makes it easy to detect the smaller particles of interest (red) with a high signal-to-noise ratio with any optical microscopy technique (D).

Opportunities for Collaboration

Nanospacer has already demonstrated its versatility in sizing extracellular vesicles, viruses, and a wide range of other particles with precision. But this is just the beginning. Our technology is in an exciting exploratory phase, uncovering applications across diverse fields.

We have functional prototypes ready and are actively seeking innovative partners and end-users to test and refine the Nanospacer concept. Your feedback is crucial, and we’re eager to collaborate to tailor Nanospacer to meet your unique requirements.
